Community Voices Shape Backin' Birkenhead Place Plan

A year‑long conversation mentored by Prosocial Place has led to the creation of the Community Place Plan, a locally driven vision for the town’s future. Residents from across Birkenhead took part in walks, café discussions, park‑bench conversations and online sessions, sharing what the town means to them and what would help strengthen its sense of belonging.

Supported by Wirral Council and the GroundsWell Consortium—but independent of any funding agenda—the process centred on listening to local people. Participants explored what makes a good town, what fosters connection, and what improvements could make everyday life better.

Hundreds of contributions gradually formed a clear picture: economic wellbeing, creativity, heritage, and neighbourhood identity are all closely linked. These themes have now been woven into the Birkenhead Place Plan, described as a “living expression” of community hopes and priorities.

The Backin’ Birkenhead movement, which has guided the process, says the plan showcases the passion and imagination already present in the town and provides a strong foundation for the next phase of community‑led regeneration.
